Much more than just a theatre group!

We are always looking for new members to be part of our family of creative people.

Bringing happy occasions to the community.

Ever imagined yourself on stage acting or singing, or did it at school and promised to go back one day?

Or ever wanted to learn tech stuff like lights or sound, or be a set designer, events co-ordinator or marketing person?

All of these pursuits and more are available in a relaxed friendly local group with Top of the Torrens Theatre group.

With over 40 amateur productions over the last 20 years and a dedicated audience, we are known and loved as a favourite event twice a year on the local calendar.

We produce two performances each year in Mount Pleasant.

Also we raise funds with our famous hamburger stalls, People’s Choice lottery tickets and manning the gates at the Mount Pleasant Farmer’s Market.

Theatre Customs And Superstitions

From the first of TOTT's theatrecraft workshops

1: No whistling backstage. Stated reason; May confuse signals and cause falling sandbags Probable reasons or origins; It is irritating. Sound carries in theatres. Cure; Leave theatre – turn 3 times.

2: A loose thread taken from another actor’s costume means a contract is coming. Stated reason; Lucky charm. Spit on it and keep it. Wind thread around finger to find term of contract. Probable reasons or origins; Helping out a fellow actor. Showing up a rival. Removing distraction.

3: Calling Macbeth “The Scottish Play” Stated reason; It brings bad luck Probable reasons or origins; Back luck has occurred. It is such a memorable play that it can make an actor forget lines. Cure; Leave theatre – turn 3 times.

4: Don’t put shoes on dressing table. Stated reason; It brings bad luck. Probable reasons or origins; Gets in way and mucks up makeup. Cure; Leave dressing room – turn 3 times.

5: Don’t use real flowers on stage. Stated reason; It brings bad luck. Probable reasons or origins; It can make stage slippery. Cure; Don’t do it.

6: “Break a leg” Stated reason; Wishes for good luck brings the attention of the mischievous spirits. Probable reasons or origins; Reverse psychology. Obscure added meaning; A leg is a curtain that has to be pushed aside to take a bow. Numerous curtain calls might wear out or “break” the leg.

7: Congratulatory telegrams should not to be read until after the opening night show. Stated reason; It invites a bad performance. Probable reasons or origins; Makes people nervous. Counting chickens + people react better after show. Cure; Party after opening night.

8: The last line of a play should not be spoken until first night. Stated reason; It invites a bad performance. Probable reasons or origins; Still something to look forward to. Separates rehearsals from performances. Cure; In today’s theatre where lighting cues need to be timed, this tradition is no longer observed.

9: Why is it called a Green Room? Stated reason; Drury Lane Theatre had first one and it was painted green. Probable reasons or origins; The green room was the only room with windows and it was sunny. Many actors were Irish. Sun = Grian

10: Silly Slipper Night on last rehearsal. Stated reason; A TOTT tradition since Key For Two in 2000. Probable reasons or origins; De-stressing but a bit of fun, while keeping focussed.
